How to Determine Your 2010 Homeowners Exemption
Senior Exemption
If you were 65 or older in 2010 you qualify for this exemption for your home of primary residence. It reduces your bill by 4,000 in equalized assessed value. Last year the State Legislature changed the law so that seniors no longer automatically get this exemption. They must reapply annually.
Senior Freeze
For seniors with a total household income of under $55,000 in 2009 the assessed value can be “frozen”. Over time the discount becomes larger and larger for those who continually qualify. The forms for this exemption must be filed annually and require income information.
Long Time Occupant Exemption
It is available to households with a very specific set of requirements.
Your base EAV is simply the EAV you had in 2003 minus the 4,500 homeowners exemption plus an annual increase of 7% a year. There is no limit to how big the exemption can be.
Disabled Persons Exemption
Homeowners who were disabled in 2010 receive an exemption equal to 2,000 in equalized assessed value. A class 2 Disabled Person IL ID card or a letter from the Social Security Administration explaining your disability benefits is needed.
